NTPC invites bids for 1.2 GW of renewables and energy storage in India

India's largest thermal power plant operator NTPC has launched a tender to select developers for 1.2 GW of firm and dispatchable power from renewable energy projects backed with energy storage systems in India. The projects can be located anywhere in India and should connect to the country’s interstate transmission system. The minimum project capacity is set at 50 MW and in multiples of 10 MW only. The maximum capacity for a single bidder is set at 600 MW. Bids can be submitted until 23 July 2024. Selected bidders will set up renewable energy projects to be developed on a build-own-operate (BOO) basis.

At the end of 2023, solar and wind accounted for nearly 24% of installed capacity in India, with respectively 73 GW and 45 GW, while hydropower capacity reached nearly 52 GW. India plans to increase its non-fossil fuel capacity to 500 GW. In 2023, coal still represented 53% of India’s capacity with over 266 GW and 72% of its power generation with 1,347 TWh.
