NSW (Australia) launches tenders for 2.5 GW of renewables and 12 GWh of BESS

The Australian state of New South Wales (NSW) has launched two tenders to allocate 2.5 GW of renewable energy and 12 GWh of BESS capacity (Australian local government press release, 20/05/2026). Tender 8, focused on 2.5 GW of renewable energy, is the state’s “largest Long-Term Energy Service Agreement tender” under its Electricity Infrastructure Roadmap, and it will be run by the independent AusEnergy Service Limited (ASL). On the other hand, Tender 9 will focus on the allocation of 12 GWh of long-duration storage. Eligible technologies include large-scale batteries and pumped-storage hydropower projects

The tenders aim to provide support for projects that once operational should provide enough generation capacity to power 1.26 million homes. Selected projects are expected to be announced before the end of 2026.

According to the announcement, NSW aims to reach 90% of its 2030 target of renewable capacities through its Tender 8, while Tender 9 is expected to exceed the state’s 2030 and 2034 targets for storage capacity by 50%.
