NPCIL starts construction of units 5 and 6 at Kaiga NPP in India (+1.4 GW)

Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) has poured first concrete on units 5 and 6 at its Kaiga NPP in the state of Karnataka (India) (Indian government press release, 01/03/2026). Units 5 and 6 are 700 MW indigenously developed Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs) and both are expected to achieve criticality in about 60 months (in 2031).

The Kaiga NPP has four 220 MW units in operation with a combined capacity of 880 MW; with the addition of Units 5 and 6, the NPP is expected to reach a total capacity of 2,280 MW.

The Indian government announced in 2024 plans to bring its nuclear capacity to 22.4 GW by 2032. As of end-2024, nuclear represented only about 1% of India’s installed capacity (8.1 GW) and less than 3% of its power generation (60.5 TWh).
