Niger’s Kandadji hydropower project will receive US$150m from the IDA

The Nigerien parliament has approved an additional US$150m (XOF82bn) financing agreement with the International Development Association (IDA, World Bank’s concessional window) for the 130 MW Kandadji hydropower project in the Tillabery region of Niger. With a total estimated cost of about XOF700bn (US$1.3bn), the Kandadji project is financed by the African Development Bank, the World Bank, the Islamic Development Bank and the French Development Agency.

The dam project is led by the High Commission for the Development of the Niger Valley. It has been planned for more than 50 years but was delayed due to financing problems and by the cancellation in 2013 of the construction contract awarded to Zarubezhvodstroy, due to significant delays in construction. A new contract was awarded in August 2018 to China Gezhouba and construction restarted in April 2019. Commissioning has been delayed from 2025 to 2026 and the project is expected to generate on average 639 GWh/year. The reservoir will also increase access to water for agriculture.
