The 650 kb/d Dangote refinery, located near Lagos in Nigeria, is set to commence fuel production as it received its first shipment of crude oil from Shell International Trading and Shipping, amounting to 950,000 barrels. Dangote Group, the developer of the US$19bn refinery said that this first purchased cargo of was the first of six, which will supply 6 million barrels enabling the initial run of the refinery. The next four cargoes will be supplied by Nigeria’s state oil firm NNPC in the coming weeks and a final cargo will be supplied by the US’ ExxonMobil.
With this first shipment, the Dangote refinery, the largest single-train refinery in the world, will be able to begin its operations. After an initial output of 370 kb/d, it should produce 327 kb/d of gasoline, 244 kb/d of diesel, 56 kb/d of jet fuel/kerosene, and 290 kt/year of propane. After years of delay, the refinery was inaugurated in May 2023 and was scheduled to begin production in October 2023, but the supply of crude oil suffered more delays. The cost of the project soared from US$9bn at the start of construction in 2017 to US$19bn.
NNPC manages the country’s 3 other refineries (Port Harcourt I and II and Kaduna), with a total capacity of around 450 kb/d. Most of the capacity is currently idle.
