Nigeria launches 1 GW solar IPP solar electrification programme

The Nigeria Rural Electrification Agency (REA) has issued a request for expression of interest for the 1,000 MW Jigawa solar independent power producer (IPP) electrification programme in the state of Jigawa (North West Nigeria). REA is seeking consultancy companies to conduct feasibility studies and master plan design for the electrification programme, which will be deployed in the city of Gwiwa (Jigawa).

Jigawa IPP is supported by the African Development Bank and will use different solar technologies, such as photovoltaic (PV) and concentrated solar power (CSP). The selected projects will be connected to the domestic grid and sell the produced electricity to Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading (NBET) through long-terms power purchase agreements (PPAs).

Nigeria plans to increase access to electricity to 75% and 90% by 2020 and 2030 (60% in 2017) respectively and intends to have a 10% share for renewable energies in its energy mix by 2025 (less than 1% as of 2017).
