NHPC invites bids to develop up to 2.4 GW of solar PV + BESS in India

The Indian state-owned utility NHPC has launched a tender for the development of 1.2 GW of ISTS solar PV capacity with 600 MW/1,200 MWh battery energy storage systems (BESS) across India, with an additional 1.2 GW of PV capacity with BESS under a greenshoe option. Bids can be submitted until 18 October 2024.

The minimum project size is set at 50 MW with a minimum BESS component of 25 MW/50 MW. Maximum project size is set at 600 MW with a minimum ESS component of 300 MW/600 MWh. With the greenshoe option, for a single bidder, the cumulative capacity offered should not exceed 1.2 GW for solar PV, with a minimum ESS component of 600 MW/1,200 MWh.

At the end of 2023, solar and wind accounted for nearly 24% of installed capacity in India, with respectively 73 GW and 45 GW, while hydropower capacity reached nearly 52 GW. India plans to increase its non-fossil fuel capacity to 500 GW.
