New York (US) plans to install 1.5 GW of storage capacity by 2025

The government of the State of New York (United States) has approved a roadmap developed by the Department of Public Service and New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) regarding the installation of 1.5 GW of greenfield energy storage capacity by 2025. The energy storage plan is expected to improve the resiliency of the state's grid and keep it running in case of extreme weather conditions.

Reaching this goal could provide US$2bn in consumer benefits including power distribution system savings while reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The development of this storage capacity could help the state cope with the development of renewable energy sources such as solar and wind.

So far, only 60 MW of energy storage capacity is deployed on the state's territory while 500 MW are in the project pipeline. Besides, the state also owns 1,400 MW of conventional pumped hydro storage.
