The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) has awarded contracts for eight new bulk energy storage projects and 13 large-scale renewable energy projects totalling approximately 1.7 GW and worth a combined USD3.7bn (NYSERDA press release, 23/09/2026).
The projects with includes a storage portfolio comprising 950 MW of lithium-ion projects with durations ranging from 4 to 8 hours. The 8 projects were selected from 46 proposals totalling around 6 GW and are located across New York City, Long Island, the Hudson Valley and western New York. The renewable energy awards exceed 719 MW and comprise solar, onshore wind and hydroelectric facilities capable of supplying more than 230,000 homes. All 21 projects are expected to enter operation by end-2030, with contract payments starting only after commercial operation.
NYSERDA also plans a second bulk storage solicitation by end-2026, supporting its procurement target of 3 GW across three solicitations.
The awards expand the State of New York’s portfolio to 95 renewable energy projects currently operational or under development and totalling around 10.5 GW, enough to supply 4.6 million homes. This includes 3.2 GW under construction and 36 operational projects delivering 2.7 GW.
