New York and Maine (US) announce plans to develop offshore wind by 2040

The US states of New York and Maine have announced their plans to develop offshore wind capacity in their coasts, with NY aiming to install 9 GW by 2035 and Maine 3 GW by 2040.

The New York state government has unveiled plans to launch its fifth offshore wind solicitation (NY5) for up to 2.6 GW installed capacity, a coordinated US$300m request for proposals (RFP) focusing on major component offshore wind supply chain investments and an additional US$200m supportive manufacturing and logistics RFP to support investments in infrastructure and manufacturing to grow New York’s domestic offshore wind supply chain. A sixth wind tender has also been announced for 2025, a delay given that the solicitation was originally scheduled for release in late 2024.

The US state of Maine has also begun its process to procure up to 3 GW of offshore wind energy by 2040 by releasing a request for information (RFI) to obtain public input for the preparation of its first commercial offshore wind solicitation in the Gulf of Maine.

At the federal level, the United States targets 30 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030 and 15 GW of floating offshore wind capacity by 2035 (only 42 MW were operational at the end of 2023).
