New Mexico regulator (US) approves Xcel Energy's 1.2 GW wind projects

The New Mexico Public Regulation Commission (PRC) has approved Xcel Energy's US$1.6bn plan to build two large wind parks along the Texas - New Mexico border (United States) with a total combined capacity of 1,230 MW. However, the utility is still waiting approval from the Texas regulator. The concerned projects include:

- Hale Wind project, a 478 MW project located in Texas (self-build by Xcel Energy)

- Sagamore Wind Project, a 522 MW wind park project located in New Mexico (self-build)

- Bonita, a 230 MW wind park project located in Texas (purchase agreement with NextEra Energy Resources)

Xcel Energy plans to develop its wind power portfolio by more than 50% by the end of 2021 with the construction of a dozen wind parks in several states, adding 3,700 MW of wind power to the domestic grid.
