New Jersey (US) unveils schedule for 6.4 GW offshore wind sale

The governor of New Jersey (United States) has presented the schedule for the next offshore wind auctions, which will offer 6,400 MW of offshore wind capacity to be developed in the state.

An auction for 1,200 MW of offshore wind capacity will be opened by September 2020, with projects awarded by the second quarter of 2021 and expected to be commissioned by 2027. Two other solicitations for 1,200 MW each will follow: the first 1,200 MW auction will be launched in the third quarter of 2022, with awards expected in the second quarter of 2023 and projects commissioned by about 2029; the next one will be launched in the second quarter of 2024, with awards in the first quarter of 2025 and projects expected in 2031. A sale for 1,400 MW of offshore wind capacity is expected in the second quarter of 2026 (awards scheduled in the first quarter of 2027 and projects to be commissioned by 2033) and another 1,400 MW auction is planned in the first quarter of 2028 (projects awarded in the first quarter of 2029 and expected in 2035).

New Jersey plans to reach 50% renewable energy by 2030 and a 100% clean energy economy by 2050. The state aims to reach 7,500 MW of offshore wind capacity by 2035. A 1,100 MW offshore wind project was already awarded to Ocean Wind (the joint venture of Ørsted and PSEG) in June 2019 (commissioning expected in 2024). The auctions for the remaining 6,400 MW of offshore wind capacity will thus be held between September 2020 and early 2028.
