The New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (NJBPU, United States) has voted to open the application window for the US state’s third solicitation for offshore wind capacity, which seeks to award between 1.2 GW and 4 GW of offshore wind capacity, building on the previously awarded 3.75 GW. This third offshore round will help New Jersey reach its goal of attaining 11 GW of offshore wind by 2040.
In 2019, the Board made an award from its first offshore wind solicitation to Ørsted’s 1.1 GW Ocean Wind project, the largest single-project award in the country at that time. In 2021, the Board made its second and third awards to Ocean Wind II for 1.1 GW of offshore wind capacity and Atlantic Shores for 1.5 GW of offshore wind capacity. The three projects are expected to inject US$4.7bn into New Jersey’s economy.
At the federal level, the United States targets 30 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030 and 15 GW of floating offshore wind capacity by 2035 (only 42 MW were operational at the end of 2021). The US administration has already held three offshore wind lease auctions since 2021, notably in the states of New York and California.
