MSEDCL (India) awards 500 MW of solar projects, including 200 MW to SJVN

The Indian regional state-owned power utility Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company (MSEDCL) has awarded 500 MW of grid-connected intrastate solar projects, including 200 MW to Indian state-owned hydropower producer SJVN at INR2.90/kWh (US$c3.7/kWh). The company is now expected to proceed with the signing of a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with MSEDCL. SJVN will build a ground-mounted solar power plant in the state of Maharashtra (western India) through an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract within 18 months from the date of signing the PPA. The tentative cost of this project is estimated at about INR12bn (US$151m). The other winners in the auction include Tata Power Renewable Energy (150 MW), Juniper Green Energy (75 MW), Sukhbir Agro Energy (50 MW) and Avaada Energy (25 MW).

Solar accounts for 12% of India’s installed capacity, with 49.3 GW (2021). Since 2016, India has commissioned on average 7.4 GW/year of solar projects, including a record 11.9 GW in 2021. The country aims to develop 175 GW of renewable power capacity by 2022, including 100 GW of solar.
