Morocco gets a US$25m loan from the AfDB for a CSP/PV hybrid project

The African Development Bank Group (AfDB) has granted Morocco a US$25m loan through the Climate Investment Funds’ Clean Technology Fund (CIF CTF). Funds will be used for the innovative Noor Midelt I hybrid Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) and Photovoltaic (PV) power plant project.

It will consist of two separate CSP plants with an expected capacity of 150-190 MW each and a minimum storage of 5 hours, and a PV component with an expected 150-210 MW capacity. As a result, each of the plants will have a total capacity of 300-400 MW for a total capacity of 600-800 MW.

This project will be developed within the framework of a public-private partnership between the Moroccan Agency for Sustainable Energy (MASEN) and private companies with a BOO (Build, Own, Operate) and transfer project structure. The plants will be operated by a special purpose company, while the electricity will be sold to MASEN through a 25-year Power Purchase Agreements (PPA).

The first phase was launched in July 2016 and as of June 2017, 5 groups of companies have been preselected by MASEN: ACWA Power, EDF Energies Nouvelles, ENGIE, Innogy SE and JGC Consortiums.
