MHPS starts building the 540 MW Hirono IGCC facility in Japan

The Japanese engineering, electrical equipment and electronics company Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems (MHPS) has begun the construction of a 540 MW integrated coal gasification combined-cycle (IGCC) power plant in Hirono-Machi, in the Fukushima Prefecture of Japan. The power project is developed by Hirono IGCC Power GK, a joint venture of TEPCO, Mitsubishi Corporation, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, and Mitsubishi Electric Corporation. The on-site assembly of the coal gasification furnace is due to start in February 2019. The IGCC system comprises a combined-cycle format integrating gas and steam turbines while coal will be gasified in a high-pressure gasification furnace. It will be located on the site of TEPCO's 4.4 GW Hirono oil-and-coal fired power plant and is expected to be commissioned by September 2021.

MHPS has also started building a similar 540 MW IGCC project for Nakoso IGCC Power GK (same shareholders as Hirono IGCC Power GK, plus Joban) in Iwaki (Fukushima prefecture). Commissioning is expected in September 2020.
