Mexico’s CFE will start building 6 GW of new generation capacity in 2026

The Mexican President has announced that the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) will start construction on new power generation projects with a combined capacity of 6 GW (Mexican government press release, 17/12/2025). The projects include 4 combined cycle (CCGT) plants, four solar PV projects and one wind asset (443 MW of clean energy). With this development, government plans to provide 54% of the national electricity, while the remaining 46% will be provided by the private sector

In October 2025, the CFE issued a call for private electricity generation projects to prioritize and expedite their investment requests for the development of 20 new projects: 15 PV projects (2,470 MW) and 5 wind projects (850 MW), with a combined capacity of over 3.3 GW of generation and almost 1.5 GW of storage capacity. The government expects to launch a second call during the first quarter of 2026.
