Mexico's CFE plans to tender 4.3 GW of gas-fired capacity

The Mexican power utility CFE plans to tender six new combined-cycle (CCGT) projects with a total capacity of 4,322 MW in strategic regions of the country. The projects will be developed based on a new contracting mechanism through the State-owned Master Investment Trust. They will be awarded through three packages, each with two CCGT power plant projects. The tender is open to national and international companies.

In December 2020, CFE unveiled plans to invest MXN62.8bn (US$3bn) between 2021 and 2025 to build 6 CCGT power plants and 5 aero-derivative units with a total capacity of 4,347 MW, including 1,714 MW to supply Baja California and 1,547 MW to supply Yucatan. The projects are expected to improve the country's energy security, solving the energy shortage in the two peninsulas.

Gas-fired power plants account for 41% of Mexico’s installed capacity, with nearly 35 GW at the end of 2019. More than 10 GW of new gas-fired power capacities are currently under development or construction.
