The Mexican Secretariat of Energy (SENER) has issued a new call for strategic power generation and energy storage projects (SENER press release, 15/05/2026).
Mexico has identified a reference requirement of 935 MW of standalone energy storage capacity across 7 regional control areas, with most projects expected to provide 3 hours of storage duration. The largest requirements have been identified in the Northern region (245 MW), the Eastern region (180 MW), and the Northwestern region (160 MW), as well as in Baja California (140 MW) and the Peninsular region (140 MW).
The program applies to both renewable generation plants and non-associated battery energy storage systems (BESS) with capacities of 0.7 MW or more. It is not open to distributed generation or self-consumption projects. The tender framework allows participation from private companies and joint ventures with the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) in renewable power generation and standalone energy storage projects aligned with Mexico’s binding electricity planning.
Expressions of interest and requests for interconnection studies may be submitted between 25 May and 25 August 2026. The process is intended to support projects expected to reach commercial operation before 2030.
The country aims to achieve a 38% share of “clean” energy sources in its power mix by 2030, rising to 50% by 2050 (Enerdata Global Energy Research).
