Mergers in power and renewables sectors reached US$243bn in 2014

According to a study released by PricewaterhouseCoopers, global mergers and acquisition in the power utilities sectors rose by 70% in 2013, to US$243.1bn. A total of 1,043 transactions were recorded during the year, an amount similar to that of 2013 (1,048 deals), but their value increased by nearly US$100bn (+70%). This strong increase is due to an exceptional number of very big deals in the US gas pipeline sector arising from corporate restructuring: the number of transactions in the gas sector dipped (139 in 2014, from 146 in 2013), but their value soared by 330%, from US$27.5bn to US$118.4bn. Kinder Morgan acquired gas assets for a total of US$76.2bn, while Williams Companies made two large acquisitions (US$15.9bn). The number of transactions in the renewable sector decreased slightly (481 in 2014, from 495 in 2013) but their value rose by 13% to US$25.8bn. In the power sector, transactions increased by 4% to 423 deals, and their value increased from US$93bn in 2013 to US$99bn. They include the US$12.1bn acquisition of Pepco Holding by Exelon and the US$9.2bn acquisition of Integrys by Wisconsin Energy Corporation in the United States.
