Malaysia launches a 2 GW solar tender in 5th round of LSS tenders

The Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources of Malaysia has launched the fifth round of the Large Scale Solar tender (LSS5), offering a total capacity of 2 GW, which is more than double the capacity made available in the fourth round in 2021. The tender includes four packages. The first two packages are for rooftop or ground-mounted solar projects and each offer a maximum capacity of 250 MW, with project capacity ranging between 1 and 10 MW and between 10 MW and 30 MW. A third package offers 1,000 MW of rooftop or ground-mounted capacity for projects ranging between 30 MW and 500 MW. Finally, a fourth package offers 500 MW for floating solar projects between 10 MW and 500 MW. Bids are due before 15 April 2024 and the solar projects are expected to be commissioned by 2026.

Malaysia aims to reach 70% of renewable power capacity and carbon neutrality by 2050. The LSS programme aims to develop larger solar projects through competitive bidding auctions. Four rounds already took place for 250 MW and 460 MW in 2017, 500 MW in 2019, and 1 GW in 2020. In 2021, the Malaysian Commission pre-selected 30 solar projects with a total combined capacity of 823 MW for the fourth round of LSS.
