The energy company Mainstream Renewable Power, majority-owned by Aker Horizons, has partnered with Maple Power, a joint venture between Enbridge and the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB), for the upcoming Celtic Sea floating offshore wind tender off the United Kingdom’s coast, which will be launched in 2023.
The Celtic Sea seabed leasing tender for floating wind, organised by the UK’s Crown Estate, is expected to enable the delivery of a total of 4 GW of renewable energy by 2035. The Celtic Sea area (300,000 km2) has the potential to generate up to an additional 20 GW of renewable power by 2045.
Maple Power has co-developed over 2 GW of offshore wind projects in Europe, including the 25 MW Provence Grand Large floating offshore project in France. Mainstream has developed and consented 20% of the UK’s offshore wind capacity either in operation or under construction, notably through the 1.2 GW Hornsea One, 1.4 GW Hornsea Two and 450 MW Neart na Gaoithe projects. Mainstream is also currently developing 1.2 GW of wind projects in South Korea and 1.8 GW of projects in Scotland (UK).
At the end of 2021, offshore wind represented nearly 13% of the UK’s installed capacity with 12.7 GW. The country plans to raise offshore wind capacity to 40 GW by 2030.
