Lithuania launches first offshore wind tender for an up to 700 MW project

Lithuania’s State Energy Regulatory Council (VERT) has launched a tender for the development of an up to 700 MW offshore wind project in the Baltic Sea. The subsidy-free offshore wind park will be located about 29 km from the Lithuanian coast on an area of nearly 138 km2. The capacity of the park will have to be comprised between 580 and 700 MW, and the project is expected to be fully commissioned by 2030. The winner of the tender will be responsible for connecting the project to the onshore power transmission network.

An additional tender for the development of another similarly sized offshore wind project is scheduled to be announced in the autumn of 2023. Both offshore wind parks would provide about half of Lithuania's current electricity demand.

In 2021, wind power represented about 15% of Lithuania’s installed capacity with 623 MW (100% onshore). The country currently has 323 MW of wind capacity under construction and over 1.5 GW under development.
