Lithuania to auction 2.1 TWh of renewables in 2020-2022

The Lithuanian Ministry of Energy proposed three renewable energy auctions for 2020-2022. The country will allocate 0,7 TWh of electricity per year, regardless of renewable energy type (biomass, biogas, solar, or wind). To attract investors, the Government will require electricity distribution and transmission system operators to publish online details of existing free grid in their networks.

Lithuania aims to bring online a combined 2.1 TWh/year of power, having produced 3.4 TWh of electricity in 2018. This represented around one-third of its consumption, importing the majority of the power consumed from neighbouring countries Sweden, Russia and Belarus. Lithuania aims to get 38% of its power from renewables by 2025, requiring around 5 TWh of additional electricity generation. Its installed renewable electricity capacity totalled 1.5 GW in 2017, of which 1 GW was hydro and 0.5 GW wind.
