Kuwait plans to tender 1.1 GW of solar by end-2023

The Kuwaiti Ministry of Electricity, Water, and Renewable Energy is planning to issue Requests for Qualifications (RFQs) for the upcoming phases of the Al Shaqaya Renewable Energy Project (SREP) by the end of 2023. The SREP is expected to reach a total capacity of 4,500 MW.

The first phase focuses on a 1,100 MW independent solar photovoltaic project, with the RFQ scheduled in the next two to three months. The subsequent phase will introduce a 200 MW concentrated solar power (CSP) plant with 5 hours of storage, and RFQ preparation is underway. The third phase will include a 1,500 MW Independent Power Producer (IPP) solar project, followed by a final phase of a 1,700 MW IPP solar project. Requests for quotations for third and fourth phases will follow throughout 2024, with all phases expected to be connected to the grid by 2027-2028.

Kuwait's government also plans to implement distributed solar energy projects, including rooftop solar with capacities up to 5 MW and medium-range projects from 10 MW to 150 MW, to achieve its goal of raising the share of renewables to 15% of the country's power mix by 2030. Renewables currently accounts for less than 1% of Kuwait's installed capacity (20.3 GW), with around 90 MW of solar.
