The Kazakhstan Electricity and Power Market Operator (KOREM) has unveiled the results of the country's first solar auction. The ceiling price was set at KZT32/kWh (US$8.8c/kWh). In total, 20 companies submitted 28 applications for 1,270 MW of projects with capacities ranging between 10 MW and 100 MW.
170 MW of solar PV projects were awarded to four companies with winning prices ranging between KZT18.6/kWh and KZT22.9/kWh (US$5.1c/kWh and US$6.3c/kWh). Shell Kazakhstan and JSC Hydroenergy secured one 50 MW project each, while Avelar Solar Technology won a 50 MW project and a 20 MW project. They will be located in southern Kazakhstan and will be commissioned between 2019 and 2020.
In total, Kazakhstan has planned auctions for a total capacity of 1,000 MW in 2018, of which 290 MW for solar projects, 620 MW for wind projects, 75 MW for hydropower facilities and 15 MW for bio-power plants.
