The Karnataka Power Transmission Corp. Ltd (KPTCL), the power transmission system operator of the state of Karnataka (southern India), has awarded 350 MW/700 MWh to three bidders in its tender for 500 MW/1 GWh battery energy storage systems (BESS) launched in February 2025. Pace Digitek was awarded 250 MW/500 MWh and Oriana Power won 50 MW/100 MWh, both at a tariff of INR 2.54 lakh/MW/month (US$2,976/MW/month), while Sarala Project Works was awarded 50 MW/100 MWh at a lower tariff of INR 2.49 lakh/MW/month (US$2,917/MW/month). Winners will develop the BESS projects on a build-own-operate (BOO) basis across Karnataka.
These projects are expected to support the development of renewable projects in India, which added an unprecedented 25 GW of renewable energy capacity in fiscal year 2024-2025, compared to 18.57 GW added in 2023-2024. Solar capacity additions accelerated from 15 GW in FY2024 to nearly 21 GW in FY2025 and solar capacities surpassed 100 GW during the FY.
