Japan launches tender for 4 offshore wind zones

The Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry (METI) and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism (MLIT) of Japan have launched the first-ever auction for fixed bottom offshore wind projects in four areas off the country’s coast. The auction covers three zones off the coast of Akita Prefecture - off Noshiro (Mitane Town and Oga City), Yurihonjo City North and Yurihonjo City South - and off Choshi City in the Chiba Prefecture. It will remain open until 27 May 2020.

In March 2020, the Japanese power utility Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) and Danish power company Ørsted decided to create a joint venture to jointly bid for a new 1 GW offshore wind project off Choshi City. In May 2020, RWE and Kyushu Electric signed a Joint Bidding Agreement to start a full-scale feasibility study for a 700 MW offshore wind project that would be developed off the coast of Yurihonjo City. In June 2020, the Japanese trading house Sumitomo Corporation formed a consortium with Inpex, Japan Petroleum Exploration (JAPEX), TEPCO Renewable Power, JR-East Energy Development (a unit of East Japan Railway) and three other companies to jointly bid at a planned auction for a 480 MW offshore wind plant project near Noshiro City, Mitane Town and Oga City. In September 2020, Electric Power Development (J-Power), JERA, the joint venture between the Japanese power utilities TEPCO and Chubu Electric, and Equinor created a consortium to jointly evaluate and work towards submitting a bid for offshore wind power projects off Noshiro City, Mitane Town, and Oga City, and off Yurihonjo City.
