Italy awards 422 MW of renewable capacity in undersubscribed tender

The Italian energy agency Gestore dei Servizi Energetici (GSE) has awarded 422 MW of solar, wind and hydropower capacity in Italy’s latest tender, which represents less than 20% of the original offered capacity of 2,149 MW (including capacity that had not been assigned in previous tenders). GSE received 120 applications with a combined capacity of 449.4 MW for this 11th call for tender.

In the 1 MW of more category, 368 MW were awarded to wind and solar PV projects (149 MW for solar and 219 MW for wind). For this category, GSE received 24 applications totalling 382 MW, out of an original quota of 1,254 MW. In the less than 1 MW category, a total of 95 requests were received totalling 65 MW, out of an original offered capacity of 435 MW.

Italy’s renewable call for tenders have regularly been undersubscribed. During the previous renewable auction in January 2023 (10th), GSE only awarded 145 MW of renewable capacity out of a total offered quota of 2,321 MW (6% of the available capacity). The 9th auction (September 2022) was 18% subscribed with 520 MW awarded for a total capacity of 2,857 MW.

The next call for tender, the 12th, will be launched on 31 May 2023 and completed on 30 June 2023. Since the start of the programme, GSE has allocated 6.13 GW of renewable projects, or 77% of the targeted capacity of 8 GW first announced in 2019.
