Israel awards a 300 MW solar project to EDF in the Negev desert

The Israeli Government has announced the French utility EDF as the winner of its latest solar tender for the construction of a 300 MW solar project in the Negev desert. The Dimona tender was organized by the State of Israel to build and operate the largest solar field in Israel. EDF Renewables was chosen after bidding the lowest price per kWh of electricity. The 300 MW project is located on a desertic plot of 3.1km2 close to the city of Dimona (Israel) and is scheduled to start construction in 2026.

The project is part of a series of a joint private-public partnership (PPP) for the construction of renewable projects that include two thermo-solar power plants and two photovoltaic power plants, which already supply more than 300 MW to the electricity sector, as well the Ashalim 3 solar project that will produce an additional 110 MW, whose tender for construction ended last in July 2024, with EDF as the winner.

At the end of 2023, Israel had a total installed capacity of 20.7 GW of which solar PV was of almost 22% with 4.5 GW.
