The Government of Ireland has approved the terms and conditions for its first offshore wind auction, which is expected to award up to 2.5 GW of capacity under the Irish offshore renewable electricity support scheme (ORESS 1).
The qualification stage and auction process will take place in the first half of 2023, and final auction results will be published by June 2023. The auction is expected to provide enough clean electricity for 2.5m Irish households and the 2.5 GW capacity could be operational by 2026 or 2027.
Ireland plans to reach 7 GW of offshore wind by 2030. At the end of 2021, Ireland only had 25 MW of installed offshore wind capacity (but 4.3 GW for onshore capacity). Currently, the country has more than 24 GW of wind projects under development (310 MW under construction).
