Ireland plans a second ORESS offshore wind auction in 2025 (up to 1.5 GW)

The Irish Ministry of Environment, Climate and Communications has announced plans to hold two offshore wind auctions in 2025 instead of one, as part of its ORESS 2 tender. The second auction (ORESS 2.2) will be held at the Li Ban site, located off Waterford, Ireland, and could potentially award between 1.1 GW and 1.5 GW of offshore wind capacity.

The first auction (ORESS 2.1), which will be held in early 2025 at the Tonn Nua site (also off Waterford), is expected to award 900 MW of offshore wind capacity. The Irish Government approved the terms for the Tonn Nua auction and released critical geophysical data for this tender in early November 2024.

In 2019, Ireland presented its Renewable Electricity Support Scheme (RESS), with its offshore variant being named ORESS), which aims to help cover 80% of the country’s power demand with renewables by 2030. In 2023, Ireland’s power generation reached 31.5 TWh, of which over 45% came from renewables and 50% from gas.
