Ireland launches a consultation on the renewable electricity support scheme

The Irish government has launched a public consultation on the Renewable Electricity Support Scheme (RESS), which is scheduled to help the country covering 27% of the country’s power demand with renewables by 2030. The consultation runs until 3 November.

The document provides a new comprehensive regulatory framework for solar and wind projects and will set the support for large-scale renewables through a competitive bidding process. These auctions may be technology-neutral or technology-specific (wind and solar).

The Irish government intends to switch from the current feed-in tariff support provided by the Refit (renewable energy feed-in tariff) programmes. Besides, moving to an auction system means that the new RESS would meet the 2014 EU State Aid guidelines as auctions are expected to limit distortions of competition and increase the cost effectiveness. The idea behind the consultation is to find the most cost-effective way to meet the country's renewable energies obligations. Around 2.3 GW of wind capacity are planned for installation by 2030.
