Ireland awards 646 MW of renewable capacity in its RESS 3 auction

Ireland has awarded 646 MW of renewable capacity in the latest round of its Renewable Electricity Support Scheme (RESS 3). The country awarded 148 MW of wind capacity, spread over three wind projects, and 498 MW of solar capacity. It is significantly less than the previous round (RESS 2) in 2022, which awarded 414 MW of wind capacity and more than 1.5 GW of solar.

The average strike price stood at €100.47/MWh for RESS 3, higher than the previous rounds where they reached €97.87/MWh in RESS 2 and €74.08/MWh in RESS 1.

The main onshore wind winner was the UK’s SSE Renewables, which secured 101 MW of capacity for its Yellow River wind project in County Offaly, while Denmark’s Ørsted was awarded a 43.2 MW contract for its Farranrory wind project in Tipperary. Solar winners included ESB for its 101 MW Tracystown PV project, while Ørsted secured 81 MW (Garrenleen solar project).
