Ireland awards 2 GWh of renewable capacity in its RESS 4 auction

Ireland’s power transmission system operator (TOS) Eirgrid has announced the results of its Renewable Energy Support Scheme (RESS 4) awarding more than 2 GWh of capacity, enough to provide more than 500,000 homes with clean energy. Among the winners are 1,146 GWh from four wind projects and about 925 GWh from solar developments solar projects. In total, 1,333.6 MW was awarded, with 959.8 MW of solar and 373.8 MW of wind.

The average weighted bid price was €96.85/MWh, which is lower than the prices seen in the past RESS tenders, with an average price of €90.47/MWh for wind and €104.76/MWh for solar, which are expected to rise over the years since they are partly index to inflation. The awarded capacity is expected to boost Ireland’s energy capacity by 20%, with wind accounting for 55% of the volume in GWh terms.

The Irish government presented in 2019 the Renewable Electricity Support Scheme (RESS), which aims to help cover 80% of the country’s power demand with renewables by 2030. In 2023, Ireland’s power generation reached 31.5 TWh, of which over 45% came from renewables and 50% from gas.
