Iraq opens bids for a 70,000 bbl/d refinery project in Diwaniya

The government of Iraq has launched a tender for the construction of a 70,000 bbl/d refinery project in Diwaniya (south of Bagdad). Interested investors have until 31 July 2018 to submit offers.

Several refinery projects are underway in the country, which plans to retire part of the existing refining capacity and build new facilities. It aims at increasing the country's domestic refining capacity to more than 1.4 mb/d through several projects: 140,000 bbl/d Karbala, 150,00 bbl/d Maysan, 150,00 bbl/d Kirkuk or 46,000 bbl/dd Bazian. It also plans to invite bidders for the development of three other refineries: two 150,000 bbl/d facilities in Nasiriya (southern Iraq) and in the western Anbar province, along with a 100,000 bbl/d refinery in the city of Qayyarah in the Mosul region (bid process ongoing, extended until 14 June 2018). In May 2018, the Iraqi government also signed an agreement with two Chinese companies, PowerChina and Norinco International, for the construction of the 300,000 bbl/d Al Faw (also spelled Fao) refinery at the Faw port in the Basrah region.
