According to WindEurope, renewable projects developers invested a total of €52bn in 2019, including €19bn in the construction of new wind park (-24% compared to 2018). The remaining €33bn was spent on refinancing operations (€10.2bn), project and company acquisitions (€17.5bn) as well as public market fundraising (€5.1bn). The amount of new wind capacity in Europe financed in 2019 decreased by 27%, from 16 GW in 2018 to 11.7 GW in 2019. Investment in new onshore wind projects reached €13.1bn (68% of total investments) for a capacity of 10.3 GW, while financings for new offshore wind park totalled €6.1bn (their lowest level since 2012), including €0.5bn in floating offshore.
In 2019, Spain invested €2.8bn in the onshore wind sector. The country accounted for 15% of total financing activity for the construction of new wind parks in Europe. Northern and Western Europe concentrated 60% of capital expenditures in new wind parks in Europe (€11.5bn), with more than €2bn of investments in the UK, France and Sweden and €1.5bn in The Netherlands. In addition, more than €800m was invested in Poland for 630 MW of new onshore capacity.
