India’s SECI awards 690 MW of wind capacity in undersubscribed tender

The Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) has unveiled the winners of its auction to allocate interstate transmission system-connected wind power projects (Tranche-XIV) across India. The auction, which was originally floated in February 2023, was undersubscribed, as SECI only allotted 690 MW of the original tendered capacity of 1.2 GW.

Three Indian companies were awarded capacity in the tender. Apraava Energy was awarded 300 MW at a tariff of INR3.24/kWh (US$3.94c/kWh), while SJVN Green Energy was awarded 200 MW at the same tariff. Green Prairie Energy (EverGreen Power) won 190 MW at a tariff of INR3.18/kWh (US$3.86c/kWh). Other bids did not qualify, including ones from Torrent Power (150 MW at INR3.30/kWh or US$4c/kWh), Dhaani Renewables (300 MW at INR3.36/kWh or US$4.1c/kWh) and Avaada Energy (100 MW at INR3.47/kWh or US$4.22c/kWh).

In April 2023, SECI announced the auction results for its interstate transmission system-connected wind-solar hybrid power projects tender, in which the company allocated the totality of the 1.2 GW capacity tendered.

At the end of 2021, solar and wind accounted for over 20% of installed capacity in India, with respectively 49 GW and 40 GW, while hydropower capacity surpassed 51 GW. India plans to increase its non-fossil fuel capacity to 500 GW and meet 50% of its energy requirements from renewables by 2030.
