The Indian state power company NTPC has unveiled a US$62bn plan to expand its nuclear capacity in India to over 30 GW by 2044. The plan, which expands the company’s initial target threefold, follows the Indian government’s decision to open the sector to foreign and private investment. India notably aims to establish 500 GW of non-fossil fuel electricity generation capacity by 2030 and at least 100 GW of nuclear capacity by 2047.
In 2024, India’s Department of Atomic Energy had announced plans for a 70% increase in nuclear energy capacity in the country in the next five years, with capacity expected to rise from 8 GW currently to 13 GW in 2029. The national nuclear group NPCIL operates nearly 8 GW of nuclear capacity and targets 20 GW by 2032.
As of end-2023, nuclear represented only about 1.5% of India’s installed capacity and less than 3% of its power generation.
