Indian state of Tamil Nadu targets 9 GW of solar power capacity by 2023

The government of Tamil Nadu (India) has issued the Tamil Nadu Solar Energy Policy 2019, a new document according to which it aims to reach 9,000 MW of solar power capacity by 2023. The state currently had approximately 2,200 MW of solar energy installed capacity at the end of 2018 and will need to install an additional 6,800 MW. The Tamil Nadu Solar Energy Policy 2019 prescribes that 40% of the additional capacity should come from solar rooftop systems. This represents a policy changeover, as in the past the government used to push for large-scale installations.

The new energy policy aims at setting up a framework that enables an accelerated development of solar energy in the state, which is one of the most industrial and urbanised in the country. The development of rooftop projects is expected to encourage self-consumption and the export of surplus energy to the local grid. The state government also wants to encourage and incentivise electricity consumers to develop energy systems.
