India receives 34 bids for 19 mines in its second coal auction

India’s second tender to commercially mine and sell coal has received 34 bids for 19 coal mines, including 15 non-coking coal mines, while a total of 67 fully and partially explored blocks were put for auction. The offered blocks are spread across 6 states – Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh. In October 2020, the country’s first-ever tender to commercially mine and sell coal has received 82 bids from 46 companies for 23 coal mines, while a total of 38 coal mines were put for auction. The remaining 15 mines did not receive any bid. 19 mines with a combined production capacity of 51 Mt/year were awarded in November 2020. Almost 65% of the bidders were from "non-end users", i.e. not active in coal mining or coal-fired power generation. According to preliminary statistics from the Indian Ministry of Coal, India’s production of non-coking coal and lignite declined by 1.7% in the fiscal year 2020-21 to 708 Mt, including 671 Mt of non-coking coal (-1%) and 37 Mt of lignite (-12%).
