India makes progress with over 3 GW of pumped storage projects

The Bihar State Power Generation Company Ltd (BSPGCL) has awarded 2.12 GW of pumped-storage hydropower capacity under two tenders to two private developers in India (ESS News, 17/12/2025). The winning projects under the Bihar Pumped Storage Project Promotion Policy–2025 are a 1.2 GW facility proposed by GreenCo Energies at Ekamba and a 920 MW project proposed by Sun Petrochemicals at Gosaitari, both of which are expected to be developed in the Nawada district of the Indian state of Bihar. Total investment is estimated at INR130bn (US$1.44bn).

In addition, THDC India (a subsidiary of NTPC) has commissioned Unit 3 (250 MW) of a 1 GW variable-speed pumped storage hydropower project in Uttarakhand. Alstom and Hindustan Construction Co. are developing the project and the facility is expected to provide 1 GW of peaking power to strengthen grid reliability in northern India once it starts operations.
