The government of India has launched an auction for 141 coal mines across 11 Indian States, with a cumulative peak rate of 305 Mt. With this new auction (tranche VI), India’s Coal Ministry has offered 133 blocks for auction, of which 71 are new mines and 62 are rolling over from earlier tranches of commercial auctions. In addition, 8 blocks from the second attempt of the fifth round (tranche V) of commercial auctions have been included.
Simultaneously, the Coal Ministry has announced that India plans to reach 900 Mt of domestic coal production in FY 2022-2023, against 817 Mt in FY 2021-2022. The Ministry expects an additional 5 Mt of production to come from commercial coal mines in FY23, and between 10 and 15 Mt in FY 2023-2024.
In 2021, despite being the world’s second largest coal producer, India imported 198 Mt of coal from abroad to meet its coal consumption, which attained 1,037 Mt. Coal is a major energy source as it dominates India's electricity mix, reaching 73% of the country's 1,719 TWh of power generation in 2021.
