India announces tenders for 7.2 GW of offshore wind capacity off Tamil Nadu

The Indian Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has announced that it will issue tenders for seven seabed blocks off the coast of Tamil Nadu (south-eastern India) for the development of offshore wind projects, with an estimated capacity of 7,215 MW.

Bids for 4.1 GW of projects will be issued in January 2024, while the remaining capacity will be tendered during the next fiscal year. The proposed zones cover an area of 1,443 km2 and the MNRE will appoint the National Institute of Wind Energy (NIWE) to conduct the bidding process. Leasing of the seabed area to the chosen developer will initially be for five years, extendable by one year. Successful bidders will have to commission their site within this five-to-six-year period.

As of end-2022, India did not yet have installed offshore wind capacity (but nearly 42 GW of onshore wind capacity). India plans to increase its non-fossil fuel capacity to 500 GW and meet 50% of its energy requirements from renewables by 2030.
