Ignitis wins Lithuania’s first 700 MW wind tender, second tender planned for 2024

Ocean Winds (a 50:50 joint venture between Engie and EDP Renewables)  and the Lithuanian company Ignitis Group have been confirmed as winners of the first 700 MW Lithuanian offshore wind tender. The award was announced by the Lithuanian National Energy Regulatory Council, which oversees the tender floated in late March 2023. Ignitis and Ocean Winds will now set up a joint venture company in Lithuania to develop the project.

The area for the offshore wind park development is located about 30 km from Lithuania’s Baltic Sea coast, covering an area of approximately 120 km2. The project is expected to be commissioned in 2030. It should generate up to 3 TWh/year of electricity, which would meet up to 25% of Lithuania’s current electricity demand.

In addition, the Lithuanian Ministry of Energy has held consultations to prepare for the country’s second offshore wind auction, which may also award 700 MW in capacity. Following the consultation, the second auction is now planned to be launched in January 2024, slightly later than the original plan to hold the tender before the end of 2023.

In 2021, wind power represented about 15% of Lithuania’s installed capacity with 623 MW (100% onshore). The country currently has over 270 MW of wind capacity under construction and over 2.2 GW under development.
