Lithuania’s Ignitis Group and the renewable developer Ocean Winds (a 50:50 joint venture between Engie and EDP Renewables) have been announced as the provisional winners of the 700 MW Lithuanian offshore wind project tender, which was floated in late March 2023. The area for the 700 MW capacity offshore wind park development is located about 30 km from Lithuania’s Baltic Sea coast, covering an area of approximately 120 km2. The project is expected to be commissioned in 2030. It should generate up to 3 TWh/year of electricity, which would meet up to 25% of Lithuania’s current electricity demand.
An additional tender for the development of another similarly sized offshore wind project is scheduled to be announced in the autumn of 2023.
In 2021, wind power represented about 15% of Lithuania’s installed capacity with 623 MW (100% onshore). The country currently has over 300 MW of wind capacity under construction and over 1.5 GW under development.
