IEC (Israel) selects turbine supplier for 630 MW Orot Rabin CCGT project

Israeli state-run power group Israel Electric Corporation (IEC) has awarded a contract to the turbine provider General Electric (GE) to deploy and maintain a new gas-fired power unit at the Orot Rabin power plant in the coastal city of Hadera. GE will supply a 9HA.01 heavy duty gas turbine (an order for a second gas turbine is expected at the end of 2019), the steam turbine, generator, HRSG, and balance of plant equipment and will service the power plant over a 15-year period. The new 630 MW gas-fired power plant will replace older units that run on coal.

Israel plans to gradually reduce its coal-fired power generation capacity and to completely stop the use of coal for energy purposes by 2030. This move is in line with the objectives of the Powering Past Coal Alliance (PPCA), which was launched in November 2017 and supports a reduction in the use of coal in OECD countries by 2030 and in the world by 2050.

Israel's coal-fired power capacity stood at 4.5 GW in 2018, i.e. 26% of the total installed capacity; and coal-fired power plants generated 22 TWh in 2017 (1/3 of the power mix). If the plan comes true, Israel will then progressively stop using coal at its Orot Rabin (2.2 GW) and Rutenberg (2.2 GW) coal-fired power plants, located respectively in Hadera and Ashkelon and owned by Israel Electric Corporation (IEC). The share of coal in the country's power generation mix will be progressively replaced by natural gas but the development of solar and wind projects could provide an alternative as well.
