Iberdrola scraps 1.8 GW Argyll Array offshore wind project (UK)

Following detailed technical and environmental site studies, Scottish Power Renewables (SPR), a subsidiary of Iberdrola's Scottish Power, has decided not to proceed with the development of the Argyll Array offshore wind project in the United Kingdom in the near future. The company has stated that the project may be viable to reconsider as offshore wind technology develops in the longer term, but estimates that will not be within the next decade. Scottish Power Renewables has been working on the Argyll Array project since 2009. The 1,800 MW wind project was expected to be commissioned in 2020 (construction starting in 2018).

Scottish Power Renewables continues to demonstrate commitment to offshore wind in the UK, with the 389 MW West of Duddon Sands project currently under construction in the Irish Sea with DONG Energy. An application for consent was also submitted in 2012 with Vattenfall for the East Anglia ONE offshore windfarm, which could have a capacity of up to 1,200 MW.

This decision follows RWE and Centrica, which have both cancelled an offshore wind project (1.2 GW Atlantic Array for RWE in November 2013 and 580 MW West Bank sold by Centrica to DONG Energy in December 2013), after the British government announced new subsidies under a renewable energy support scheme from 2018.
