The Egyptian General Authority for Investment (GAFI) will commission the Polish energy company Hynfra to build a 1 Mt/year green ammonia plant in Egypt. The first phase, producing between 100 and 400 kt/year of ammonia, will require an investment of US$1.6bn and will be complete in 2030.
The project would require an investment of US$10.6bn to reach a total production capacity of 1 Mt/year. The produced ammonia is destined to be exported to Europe.
Egypt is targeting investments of US$60bn in the coming decades to become a global centre for green hydrogen and green ammonia. In August 2024, the Egyptian Government unveiled its National Low-Carbon Hydrogen Strategy, in which the country aims to take a share of about 8% of the global market by 2040 by producing 5.6 Mt/year of hydrogen for export.
