Hydro-Quebec targets 4 GW of wind in Canada by 2030 via a new mechanism

The Canadian power utility Hydro-Quebec has announced it will cancel upcoming calls for two renewable energy tenders that were supposed to be launched by the end of 2022 and instead will focus on creating a procurement strategy with a new mechanism targeting the development of over 4 GW of wind power in suitable areas in Canada by 2030.

Quebec’s Ministry of Economy, Innovation and Energy mandated Hydro-Quebec to abandon the auctions for 1 GW of wind energy and 1.3 GW of renewable energy (announced in April 2022) in their current form, and instead plan for the optimisation of the development of wind power supplies by 2030 so that areas with available network capacity or with opportunities for quick upgrades are identified and prioritised.

Quebec's electricity consumption is forecasted to rise by 12% to 20 TWh by 2029. The province aims to lower its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in 2030 by 37.5% compared to with 1990 levels and to reach carbon neutrality by 2050.
